A large sign near a Beit Shemesh synagogue calls for women to cross the street to the other side due to the area’s sensitivity.  The municipality is refusing to remove the sign, which has been in place for a long time, claiming that such an act would only increase the placement of such signs throughout the city.

MK Lia Shemtov (Israel Beitenu) wrote the mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, and the Transport Minister Israel Katz (Likud), asking them to remove the signs in Arabic on the Jerusalem Light Rail. According to her, a law stating that Arabic is an official language in Israel never existed, and all use of it is derived from a law dated back to the British mandate (The king’s order to his council). “The Supreme Court had stated that the use of Arabic is required by the central government and not the municipalities when discussing road signs”.
