Justice Elyakim Rubinstein stated today that the Supreme Court intends to adopt an arrangement initiated by the Ministry of Transportation, whereby the mehadrin bus lines (where women are required to sit at the back of the bus), will be operated with ministerial approval for buses which serve the ultra-orthodox (haredi) population. Under this arrangement, the Ministry of Transportation will conduct open and under-cover control of the bus lines’ operation, to prevent violence against women riding on them. The Rabbis Committee for Transportation Issues – the ultra-orthodox organization which promotes the separation between men and women on bus lines – argued that the authorization of the mehadrin bus lines should not be made conditional upon the absence of cases of violence or coercion. They say that “anyone who seeks provocations to have an excuse to change the nature of the bus lines – will find them.” (Hebrew ;)
