Ministry of Transportation started Driving School classes separating men from women. According to a source in the Ministry, they allow separate classes for all ultra-Orthodox men who wish to study without women: “This came up due to their sensitivity to this issue. You have to understand, the ultra-Orthodox sector have separation in their buses, and all of a sudden they come here, and sit for long hours together with secular women.”

The Supreme Court has decided that the separation between men and women on buses will become a permanent arrangement. A three-judge panel today (Thursday) adopted the arrangement initiated by the Ministry of Transportation which permits separation between men and women on Mehadrin lines – the bus routes which primarily serve the ultra-orthodox (haredi) population. Under this arrangement, the separation will be consensual, and no force or violence will be applied to women passengers. The arrangement further states that the Ministry of Transportation will enforce the arrangement with an inspection system. The decision maintains the current condition, where women do not sit in the front part of the bus on Mehadrin lines. (Hebrew)
