The military judge advocate, Major General Avihai Mendelblitt, decided to close the investigation against former Kfir brigade commander, Colonel Itay Virov. Colonel Virov was suspected of instructing his soldiers to use force against detained Palestinians. In court testimony, defending one of his soldiers, Virov said that “a slap to the face, sometimes a blow to the back of the head and sometimes kneeing for the purposes of calming down [a prisoner] is reasonable. We’ll burst into a thousand houses to get a single AK-47. Is there a table saying what is allowed and what is forbidden? No, and it’s impossible to have one.” “Studying Virov’s testimony, it does not seem that his intention was to permit violence for violence’s sake, but to refer to cases in which the use of violence is necessary, given the mission”, wrote Mendelblitt.
