Israel Railways CEO Boaz Zafrir recently rejected an appeal by the Shutafut-Sharakah group, whose goal is to advance Jewish-Arab equality in Israel, to have station names announced in Arabic as well as Hebrew and English.  According to Zafrir, ”Multiple announcements and the long time it would take to make them by adding another language would make the train ride noisy.”

The Chairperson of the Planning Administration in the Ministry of Interior, Binat Shwartz, who ruled in favor of Israel Railways in its conflict with the Municipality of Haifa regarding the electrification of the rail system, served until recently as a project director on behalf of Israel Railways.

An Israel Railways employee claimed during a demonstration in front of a Tel Aviv train station that the planned stoppage of train service on Saturday is meant to stop people coming to the central rally of the social justice movement, and not, as claimed, for the purpose of maintenance work. The employee said that for scheduled maintenance, the company issues a notice at least a month in advance, whereas this time, for the first time, notice was given just a week in advance.
