Data presented during a debate in the Knesset’s State Comptrollership Committee shows that during 2009, the Internal Affairs Dept. closed 1,360 complaints of police brutality without investigating them due to “lack of public interest”. IAD investigated 1,505 more complaints; 34% were closed to due to lack of guilt and 39% due to lack of evidence. During the debate it turned out that the Justice Ministry, which oversees IAD, never made an internal audit of the Department’s conduct. The Chief Inspector of police, Dudi Cohen, expressed anger over the presence in the discussion of civilians who complained about being attacked by cops. (Hebrew)
