Palestinians report that a four-year-old boy, Muatazz al-Sawwaf, was killed by Israeli artillery fire in the Khan Yunis area in southern Gaza. The IDF Spokesman denied that Israel attacked the area.

During a “Land Day” protest in Gaza, 20 year old Mahmoud Zakut was shot to death by IDF soldiers. Zakut was shot near the Erez crossing in the north of the Gaza strip. According to Palestinian sources, 80 protesters were injured in clashes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, including Palestinian Parliament Member Mustafa Barghouti, who was struck in the head by a gas canister. In Rachel Crossing near Bethlehem 3 Palestinians were injured, one of them moderately injured when a piece of shrapnel from a gas canister hit his eye. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, 340 people were injured in protests across the West Bank.

MK Danny Danon (Likud) called on Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein to look into the activities of MK Ahmad Tibi (Ra’am-Ta’al) and to oust him from the Knesset, following a facebook status Tibi posted in which he identified with residents of the Gaza Strip.

Military and Security Forces: March 10, 2012

An Israeli Air Force strike in the Gaza strip killed 15 and injured 19 Palestinian people (Hebrew), two of them critically. In one of the strikes a child was injured (Hebrew). IDF spokesman, Brigadier General Yoav Mordechai, claimed that the strikes were all accurate and innocent citizens were not hurt in any of them.

The Population Authority refuses to accept a power of attorney by fax, thus denying Israeli lawyers from handling the cases of Israeli citizens residing in the Gaza Strip.  The Population Authority claims that only a power of attorney signed in the presence of the representative and his client is acceptable, and since often times residents of the Gaza Strip require legal assistance just to get out of the Strip, obtaining this power of attorney is impossible.

Military and Security Forces: February 3, 2012

The Israel Air Force attacked six targets in the Gaza Strip, in response to the firing of rockets at Israel on Wednesday.  Palestinian sources reported that a teenage boy and four year old girl were hurt in one of the attacks.

Palestinian local sources reported that an Israeli missile hit a house in the neighborhood of Shujaa’eya east of Gaza City. No injuries were reported. The IDF spokeperson’s office said it knew of no such event.

The annual United Nations report on the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories found that the number of civilian casualties in Gaza and the West Bank rose by more than 30% compared to 2010. The report addresses the Gaza blockade, which it views as collective punishment, the situation in East Jerusalem, and Area C – which is under Israeli control – where Palestinian residents are facing increasing pressure from the Israeli authorities and settlers violence.
