Five Palestinians were wounded in a settler attack on the Palestinian villages of Akraba and yanoun. One Palestinian was stabbed in several places and was evacuated on a donkey since soldiers refused to let red cross ambulances come through. According to international activists, the soldiers prevented the Palestinian residents from putting out the fire that started in their fields as a result of the attack.

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, spiritual leader of the Shas party, stated in a lesson he gave that the reason for the Carmel wildfire was the desecration of the Sabbath and failure to observe the rules of the Torah. According to Rabbi Yosef “The Gmara says that on Sabbath – a burning fire is only where the Sabbath is being desecrated. You have to study the Torah and do good deeds. How many houses were destroyed, whole neighborhoods lost – all by Divine intervention.” (Hebrew)

Israeli firefighting services are empowered to employ 1,300 firefighters – one firefighter per 7,000 residents. The average in the western world is one firefighter per 1,000 residents. The firefighters complain of old and broken equipment, inadequate supplies, low average of training and lack of coordination among bodies which are supposed to supervise and budget them. (Hebrew)

People in the Finance Ministry said they transferred 100 million NIS to the Ministry of the Interior, funds earmarked for the firefighting services, but the Ministry of the Interior made no use of the money. The Minister of the Interior, Eli Yishai, claims that 18 months ago he demanded a budget increase of 500 million NIS in order to improve the capabilities of the National Firefighting Array, According to Yishai, his office received only 70 million NIS, and it funneled them to the firefighting authorities within a month. The police suspects (Hebrew) that ultra-orthodox (Haredi) persons set fire to a church on Hanevi’im Street in Jerusalem. The church burned down early in the morning, and twelve tourists trapped in the burning building were removed and given medical treatment. The church has complained in the past of threats against it made by ultra-orthodox people.
