The UN High Commissioner for Refugees’ representative in Israel slammed Israel’s so-called voluntary return of Eritreans to their life-threatening home country under threat of detention, saying there was nothing voluntary about it. (Haaretz)

A US State Department report determines that Israel is lacking in its treatment of asylum applications.  According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), last year 4,603 new asylum applications were made in Israel.  So far the Israeli Government denied 3,692 of these applications, and approved only a single one. Israel will deport approximately 2,000 asylum seekers back to the Ivory Coast in the coming days, even though the UNHCR has yet to determine that the Ivory Coast is safe for refugee repatriation.
