Women who arrived at the Forum of Directors conference of the ultra-Orthodox newspaper Hatzofe in Jerusalem claim they were not allowed to attend the event because it was for men only. Conference speakers included, among others, Minister of Finance Yuval Schteinitz, and the mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat.
Representatives of the political Right-wing and the ultra-Orthodox Jews at the Jerusalem Municipality, announced a general recruitment of members of the Planning and Construction Committee at City Hall to thwart the mayor Nir Barkat’s plan to construct 2,500 homes for Palestinians at Sawahreh in East Jerusalem.
In accordance with the request of the ultra-orthodox singer Yaniv Ben Mashiach’s concert management, men and women in the audience were separated during his performance in Heichal Hatarbut in Tel Aviv.
The ultra-orthodox Sephardi Jews Modesty Patrol spread in ultra-orthodox neighborhoods, pamphlets named Religion’s Wall – For Sephardic Communities. A warning was printed on the back of the pamphlets, which read: “Do not get caught in the net: non-kosher mobile phones, babysitters, computers, vacations, transport, hotels, summer camps, media, work places, taxis, drivers”.
Students residing in the Hebrew University’s dorms at Hagiv’a HaTsarfatit neighborhood in Jerusalem are working on a special shuttle service for students, which will run on Friday evenings. Elements within the ultra-orthodox Jewish community said in response: “Anybody who’ll use these shuttles – his blood shall be upon his head”.
Senior Rabbis, including “Adjudicator of the Generation” Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, have published Halachic adjudication forbidding volunteering in Magen David Adom, on the ground of the first aid organization’s latest trials to recruit ultra-orthodox youth for national service in it. The Rabbis wrote that Magen David Adom is the only official national organization without a Rabbi, and warned the youth not to volunteer in it, not even for the sake of saving lives.
Knesset Members Moshe Gaffney and Uri Makleve (Yahadut Hatora) received hate mail this afternoon, in envelopes which they claimed contained a white powder. The letter said, among other things, “stop sucking our blood, take your household goods and streimel hats and skedadle to Brooklyn.” It further said, that “if you keep on blackmailing budgets on our account you will pay a heavy price; we will fight you physically, not only in demonstrations. You will feel the of our arms on your bodies and on your synagogues, we will make your lives miserable and attack you in your cities and in your neighborhoods. Signed, Price Tag.” ( WeightHebrew)
