The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court sentenced Shula Zaken, who was former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s Bureau Cheif, to four months of community service and an additional two months of probation, following her conviction of fraud and breach of trust for influencing promotions in the Tax Authority.

Former director of the Israel Tax Authority’s national intelligence unit, David Va’anunu, was sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of taking bribes, conspiracy, obstruction of justice and other offenses.

Former Income Tax commissioner, Tali Yaron-Eldar, was convicted under a plea bargain, that she represented taxpayers in front of Income Tax Authority, after her role with the Authority has ended. This is in contrast to the law that determines a cooling-off period for state officials.

State Comptroller, Micha Lindenstrauss, states in his annual report, that while various sectors in society do not pay the full tax they owe, the tax authority is negligent. Individuals who got away from paying taxes, also avoided confiscation by the Execution Office, due to deficiencies in the work of the tax authority. Among other things, confiscators failed to go after debtors who lived in certain areas, for fear of violent reaction; and sometimes they were dispatched to the wrong address, due to outdated records.
