Teachers of Arab kindergartens in Acco did not participate this year in the city’s Independence Day celebrations, honored by by Mayor Shimon Lankri. This is the first time that teachers do not take part in the ceremony. According to city council member Ahmad Audah, “You have to understand the Arab community. We can not participate in the joy nor sorrow of those who depress and dispossess us from our land. This is a human feeling. The parents had a major part in this decision. It is hard to ignore the difficult atmosphere in the Arab world against the State. Naturally, Nakba day was a factor.” Sources in City Hall said that “If the ceremony was deliberately boycotted, then we can’t keep silent about this. These city kindergartens are funded by the municipality.”

Shimon Lankri, the Mayor of Acre since 2003, participated yesterday in the “Ramla Conference – between Israel and the Nations”, organized by the Ramla Torah group and the Komemiut movement, which operates in part under the guidance of Rabbi Dov Lior, the rabbi of Kiryat Arba, who endorsed the book “The King’s Torah.” During the conference, there was a discussion panel of mayors of “mixed cities”, including Acre, Lod and Ramla, which dealt with the question: Do we need a “Jewish majority” in Israel’s cities?
