The Knesset approved the first reading of the boycott bill, which is intended to penalize Israeli citizens who take part in any financial, cultural, or academic boycott of Israel. The bill will enable the courts to levy punitive fines on Israelis taking part in such boycotts if charged by persons or organizations affected by the boycott. 32 MKs supported the law, 12 opposed.

The law calls on the minister of finance to exclude Israeli companies bidding for government tenders if they’ve signed contracts with entities requiring them to take part in boycotting Israel. This clause was formulated following the discovery that Israeli companies signed contracts for work on construction of the Palestinian city of Rawabi, under which they were required not to procure any products of Jewish settlements or employ Jewish settlers, for any of the work done for Rawabi.

Committee Chair MK Carmel Shama-Hacohen said that “before the companies’ cranes start building Rawabi, the cranes of the finance committee will make this move into a losing one.”
