A police officer was acquitted of a charge of sexual harassment committed against a national service draftee who served with him because the harassment only occurred during one telephone call, and in all his further attempts to call her she hung up the phone.

The Student Union at the Safed Academic College has approved a new protocol that establishes military or national service (open to Jews only) as a prerequisite for students applying for the position of union chairman. 55-60% of the college’s 2,500 students are Arabs.

MK Moshe Matalon (Yisrael Beitenu) has proposed a bill which would prevent citizens who did not complete their military or national service from running for the Knesset in the next elections.

The Knesset’s legal adviser has green-lit MK Ahmed Tibi’s (Ra’am-Ta’al) legislative proposal, forbidding anyone living in a settlement from being a Supreme Court Justice, as well as MK Michael Ben-Ari’s (National Union) legislative proposal, dubbed “the Joubran Law”, which blocks anyone who has not been in the army or performed national service from being a Supreme Court Justice, and blocks the position of Supreme Court President or his deputy from a serving Justice who has not fulfilled his service requirement.

Senior Rabbis, including “Adjudicator of the Generation” Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, have published Halachic adjudication forbidding volunteering in Magen David Adom, on the ground of the first aid organization’s latest trials to recruit ultra-orthodox youth for national service in it. The Rabbis wrote that Magen David Adom is the only official national organization without a Rabbi, and warned the youth not to volunteer in it, not even for the sake of saving lives.
