The Center for the Defence of the Individual (Hamoked), Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) and the Reform Center  for Religion and State have filed a petition with the High Court for Justice against the National Insurance Institute.  The organizations demand that the National Insurance Institute place a professional translator, knowledgabe in medical terms, in committees dealing with the insurance claims of residents of East Jerusalem, or alternately, that Arabic speaking physicians be posted in the committees.  The organizations claim that even though the National Insurance Institute website and the committee summons letters state that claimants are allowed to bring an interpreter with them to the committee hearing, the East Jerusalem branch of the Institute does not always allow them to do so.

2500 families of victims of terrorism have filed a lawsuit against the National Insurance Institute, claiming it has not transferred funds to them as required by law.

The Ometz association has appealed to the High Court for Justice claiming that the National Insurance Institute does not operate claims committees as required by law in order to check the validity of claims which were rejected, and instead refers the claimants to the Labor Courts.

A comprehensive survey of about 5,000 families, a representative sample of the Israeli population, which was conducted by the National Insurance Institute (NII), reveals that 10% of Israelis have experienced hunger (AKA “nutrition insecurity”) last year. Two percent all Israelis suffer from severe hunger.

The National Insurance Institute 2009 report on the extent of poverty indicates a 0.6% increase in the scope of poverty in Israel. Most poor families in Israel come from the ultra-orthodox and Arab sectors. According to the report, 6,300 families with two wage-earners earn less than the amount defined as the official indicator of poverty. (Hebrew)
