A family from Sudan was wrongfully detained prior to deportation in recent days by inspectors of the Population and Immigration Authority and placed in the Saharonim Detention Facility.  Only following an appeal to Minister of Interior Eli Yishai by social activists via Facebook was the family released.

The State Comptroller’s report on the Carmel Fire places overall responsibility for the low level of preparedness of the fire services on the whole government, headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.  The report places special responsibility on Interior Minister Eli Yishai who is in charge of the fire services and on Minister of Finance Yuval Steinitz who conditioned the transfer of funds to the fire services on their completion of an organizational reform. Minister of Interior Eli Yishai (Shas) announced that he will place a personal fine on any mayor who employs asylum seekers against a government decision.  Yishai decided to give mayors 30 days to fire all asylum seekers, or else they would risk a fine.
