The Haifa Municipal Rabbinate sent out letters to banquet halls in the city, threatening to revoke their kashrut certificate if they host New Year celebrations.

A law proposed by the Infrastructures Minister, Uzi Landau (Likud) would place Israel’s electricity under “rabbinical supervision,”. Under the law, the Chief Rabbinate would assign supervisors to all Israeli power plants to ensure they operate according to the Jewish Halacha. Supervisors will be authorized to close down power stations that would infringe the Rabbinate’s directives, as well as limit the sale of electrity from specific utilities during Shabbat or Jewish holidays.

For reasons related to Kosher, event businesses refuse to marry same-sex couples. Owners of those businesses say, that they fear of losing their Kosher certificate. An official in the Kosher supervision authority said: “It is entirely possible, that there are threats, or pressure on this matter.”

A Kashrut supervisor did not agree to give Kosher certificate to a Bat-Yam restaurant, because the manager, Eli Beinsin, is an Ethiopian immigrant. The supervisor demanded from the owner of the place, Yair Heiman, to provide documents which prove that Beinsin was Jewish. However, even two months after delivering the papers, the supervisor has failed to provide the certificate.
