A law proposed by the Infrastructures Minister, Uzi Landau (Likud) would place Israel’s electricity under “rabbinical supervision,”. Under the law, the Chief Rabbinate would assign supervisors to all Israeli power plants to ensure they operate according to the Jewish Halacha. Supervisors will be authorized to close down power stations that would infringe the Rabbinate’s directives, as well as limit the sale of electrity from specific utilities during Shabbat or Jewish holidays.

The owner of a banquet hall in Haifa filed a complaint to the police, that the city’s chief Rabbi, Shlomo Shloosh, threatened him because the owner fired a Kashrut supervisor who reports to the Rabbi.
