The State Prosecutor’s Office is creating a new department to deal with issues related to illegal immigrants. The new department will be headed by attorney Yochi Gnessin, for whom the position was specially created in order to prevent her retirement from the Prosecutor’s Office, and to which she will be appointed without a public tender. The State of Israel does not recognize diagnostic tests undergone by immigrant children in their countries of origin, and subsequently they are forced to undergo another round of diagnosis before being placed in the proper educational facilities.

Official booklet distributed at the last night’s Ph.D. degrees acceptance ceremony in Tel Aviv University, described two cases in which foreign students “did not get worthy hospitality.” Ministry of Interior refused Dr. Shoitzi (Sakinah) Hasgwa request to extend his stay in the country beyond five years, and he was forced to finish his Ph.D. in Japan, via email. The Ministry also did not approve the return to Israel of Dr. Redina Hadj’ivanovah, from the School of Chemistry, after she attended a conference in Europe two years ago, and she had to finish her doctorate at the University of Munich.

HIAS, the international organization of Jewish immigration, had stopped cooperating with the asylum seekers registration unit of the Population and Immigration Authority at the Ministry of Interior branch in Lod, due to the arrest of dozens of asylum seekers whose applications were refused by the Population and Immigration Authority.
