The committee advising Interior Minister Eli Yishai (Shas) on refugee matters rejects most request for political asylum.  For example, only four applications for refugee status were approved out of a total of 761 applications submitted in the past year.  In comparison, in 2010 approximately 25% of requests were approved in Belgium, about 20% in Switzerland and Iceland, and in the Czech Republic, approximately 15% of applications were approved.  Attorney Avi Himi, the chairman of the committee, stated in an interview that “there is no agenda to determine that they are liars.  We believe the stories told by many of them, but the problem is that objectively speaking they are not persecuted.  The question of whether a person is being persecuted objectively is a key question.  If I err in my decision, there are appeal processes – the District and even High Courts.  I accept their decisions.  The refugee laws are currently being promulgated in Israel.”
