Human rights organizations filed a High Court petition to stop a plan by the Interior and Welfare Ministries to return to their families 20 migrant children who were removed from their parents’ custody due to neglect or abuse, and to deport the families. (Ynetnews)

During a session of the Knesset’s Committee on Foreign Workers MK Danny Danon (Likud) said that all of the asylum seekers are infiltrators who should be driven out, and that those responsible for their presence in Israel are human rights organizations which lodge court petitions.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Avigdor Lieberman (Israel Beitenu) said in a party meeting that his party might reintroduce the original wording of the bill aimed at harming human rights and left wing organizations.  Lieberman further said that his party might have erred when it agreed to a watered-down version of the bill, which was then put on hold by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Attorney General, Yehuda Weinstein, handed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu an expert opinion, which says that the proposed bills aimed to restrict activity of human rights organizations are not constitutional, and that they hurt a number of constitutional rights, such as: freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and right to equality.

The bill proposing to limit donations to human rights organizations has been revised so that it will deny fundraising by organizations calling for conscientious objection or a boycott of Israel.  Other organizations will need to undergo a hearing in front of the Knesset’s Finance Committee and get the approval of the Minister of Finance in order to avoid being taxed on their donations.

MKs Faina Kirshenbaum and Dani Danon, iniatiors of the parliamentary committee of inquiry into the human rights organizations said that the purpose of the committee is “to ascertain that the orgnizations do not receive funding from terrorist organizations.” This is despite the fact that there is already a prohibition on receiving donations from terrorist organizations abroad, and the Money Laundering Authority has increased enforcement of this matter over the past few years.
