The State Comptroller has published his report on the “Harpaz document” scandal. The report says that those in IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi’s office and his associates led a campaign to gather dirt on Defense Minister Ehud Barak and that Ashkenazi was at least partially aware.  Further, the report determines that Chief of Staff aide, Col. Erez Weiner, discussed ways of obtaining slanderous information about Barak and his surroundings with Boaz Harpaz, who forged the Harpaz document. (Haaretz)

State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss has asked Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein to reopen a criminal investigation into the so-called Harpaz document. The request was made after Lindenstrauss received new information that ostensibly strengthens suspicions presented in the comptroller’s draft report on the affair. A legal figure said that the draft report reveals major malpractices in IDF promotions of senior officers, involving private business concerns in the IDF’s work and practices that endanger the state’s security.

Senior IDF generals under investigation surrounding the “Harpaz document” scandal — in which Lt. Col. (res.) Boaz Harpaz is under suspicion of fabricating a document relating to the process for choosing the IDF chief of staff — offered partial testimonies and tried to extract from the Police interrogators what they know before giving their full version of the events. Some of the officers offered parts of the information only after being called in for a second time to provide testimony.
