Senior Rabbis, including “Adjudicator of the Generation” Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, have published Halachic adjudication forbidding volunteering in Magen David Adom, on the ground of the first aid organization’s latest trials to recruit ultra-orthodox youth for national service in it. The Rabbis wrote that Magen David Adom is the only official national organization without a Rabbi, and warned the youth not to volunteer in it, not even for the sake of saving lives.

Rabbi Shlomo Aviner attacked Bnei Akiva movement for conducting shared activities for boys and girls. In a video published on Meir Institute’s website, Aviner is saying: “A mixed youth movement is not good, and a mixed society is not good. Four verdicts handed out during the past year at Regional Rabbinical Courts determine that the jurisdiction of Dayyanim (Rabbinate Judges) on the issue of couples who married abroad and are seeking to divorce, does not stop at the technicality of undoing the relationship nor at issuing a “get le-humra”. In a ruling given at the Netanya Rabbinical Court, for instance, it was determined that it is possible for the court to rule according to the Halacha in cases of providing a get document for civil marriages — a direct contradiction to a ruling of the SCJ, according to which all matters relating to a civil marriage should be determined only in civil courts.

Shmuel Eliyahu, Safed municipal rabbi, was summoned for police interrogation on suspicion of racist incitement following the rabbis’ letter, which prohibits renting apartments to non-Jews. Rabbi Eliyahu declared that he does not intend to come to the interrogation. According to Rabbi Eliyahu, “it is the right and obligation of a rabbi to decide Halachic law for people who inquire about it. We have done so in the past and we will also do so int he future.” (Hebrew)

Rabbi Dov Lior, one of the most senior deciders of Jewish law in religious Zionism, has determined that Jewish women are not allowed to obtain a sperm sample from non-Jewish men. Rabbi Lior said that the resulting infant would suffer adverse genetic traits: “The Sefer Hachinuch [book of education] states that the father’s traits pass on to the son, and if that father is not Jewish, what sort of traits can he have? Those of cruelty, of barbarism! These are not the traits that characterized the households of Israel.” (Hebrew)
