According to The Pit: The Dark Secrets behind IDF’s Worst Leadership Crisis, a book by journalists Dan Margalit and Ronen Bergman, the Special Operations Department of the Intelligence wing is infested with all sorts of corruption: shopping sprees of cheese and sausages, private use of operation vehicles etc. The book hints ex Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, used the false document prepared by Boaz Harpaz, in order to prevent the appointment of Yoav Gallant to replace him as Chief of Staff, which would have led to extending his own tenure.

The police inquiry into the Harpaz-Gallant document affair found (Hebrew) that the people close to the Chief of Staff of the IDF, Gabi Ashkenzi, searched for “damning information” on the Minister of Defense, Ehud Barak, and the next Chief of Staff, Major General Yoav Gallant.

Mordechai Shklar, CEO of the Israel Broadcasting Authority, instructed Yoram Cohen, Director of the Channel 1 News Division, to refrain from broadcasting an investigative report about the relationship between Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi and his wife Ronit with Boaz Harpaz, who is involved with the Galant Document affair (Hebrew).

The anchor of “Yoman”, Ayala Khasson, exposed (Hebrew) that Ronit Ashkenazi, wife of Army Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, was in contact with the wife of Boaz Harpaz, suspect of forging the “Gallant Document”. The two exchanged 150 text messages. This is in contradiction of the Chief of Staff’s claim he did not know Harpaz or was in contact with him. The IDF Spokesman said in reply that “Lady Ayala Khasson is running, for some weeks now, a personal campaign against the Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen, Ashkenazi, and for that purpose is abusing the Yoman program she anchors, as well as the entire news section of the Israeli Broadcasting Service”.

Chief of Staff Major General Gabi Ashkenazi accused his assistant Erez Wiener of being on of the people responsible for the dissemination of the Galant document. However, the Chief of Staff did not explain why he did not convey the document to the Minister of Defense, the Prime Minister, of the Counsel to the Government, nor why he did not present it to other generals or to the Chief Military Prosecutor.
