The fish population in Gaza waters has considerably dwindled because of over-fishing, according to OCHA report. This year’s sardine catch was the lowest recorded in the past 12 years, endangering the livelihood of half the fishermen in Gaza. There are currently 3,097 fishermen in Gaza, compared to 10,000 in the year 2000. The Israeli navy imposes restrictions on access to areas beyond three nautical miles from Gaza, enforced by firing at boats beyond those limits. Since 2009, 4 fishermen were killed and 17 wounded by such fire.
