Chairman of the Knesset’s Finance Committee, MK Moshe Gafni (Yahadut HaTora), said during his speach at the pan-Haredi political conference that when a demand to cut 350 million NIS from the Yeshiva budget he did not publish the demand and “threw it in the trash”.

The Knesset’s Finance Committee approved a proposed bill which would give a 35% income tax credit to organizations which support settlement building.  The debate on the proposed bill, the cost of which is expected to be 850 million NIS, lasted only a single minute, so that opposition committee members did not have time to enter the committee room. The Knesset’s Finance Committee approved (Haaretz) within a little more than an hour and fifteen minutes budget changes worth 15 billion Shekels.  The committee members were presented with booklets hundreds of pages long and including thousands of changes and fund transfers.  The committee did not discuss each of the items individually, and voting was held on each of the two booklets as a whole.  One of the booklets was presented to the members last week, while the other one was handed to them during the hearing, a short time before voting commenced.

The bill proposing to limit donations to human rights organizations has been revised so that it will deny fundraising by organizations calling for conscientious objection or a boycott of Israel.  Other organizations will need to undergo a hearing in front of the Knesset’s Finance Committee and get the approval of the Minister of Finance in order to avoid being taxed on their donations.

Chairman of the Knesset Finance Committee, MK Caramel Shama HaCohen (Likud), abruptly adjourned the committee session which dealt with the case of Ofer Brothers and their trade with Iran. The incident happened only a few minutes after the session began, after Shama received a note, apparently from some security official, who ordered him not to hold the meeting.

The Finance Committee called upon the government to halt cooperation of Israeli companies with the Palestinian boycott on Israeli products in the Occupied West Bank, Occupied East Jerusalem, and the Occupied Golan Heights. Committee Chair MK Carmel Shama-Hacohen said that “before the companies’ cranes start building Rawabi, the cranes of the finance committee will make this move into a losing one.”

In the course of a Knesset Finance Committee meeting Eyal Epstein, Commissioner of the Treasury’s Budget Department, refused to state information about the defense budget aloud in the presence of MK Ahmad Tibi (RAAM-TAAL). In lieu of stating the information aloud he whispered the data into the ear of MK Haim Oron (Meretz). (Hebrew)
