Chairman of the Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, MK David Rotem (Yisrael Beitenu), has asked the Central Elections Committee to bar Arab party Balad from the forthcoming elections to the 19th Knesset.  MKs Michael Ben-Ari and Aryeh Eldad (Otzma LeYisrael) asked to bar both Balad and Ra’am-Ta’al, another Arab party, while MK Ofir Akunis (Likud) has asked that MK Hanin Zo’abi (Balad) be disqualified as a candidate. The Knesset’s Labor and Welfare Committee approved for second and third reading a bill proposed by MK David Rotem (Yisrael Beitenu), chairman of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, and MK Robert Ilatov (Yisrael Beitenu).  The proposed bill would halve the national security stipend of Israeli citizens convicted of terrorism and jailed for more than 10 years.

MK David Rotem (Yisrael Beitenu) has stated that he will ask the Minister of Justice to depose Supreme Court Justice Salim Joubran for refusing to sing the national anthem at the retirement ceremony of Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch.  Following the incident MK Michael Ben-Ari (National Union) announced that he intends to put forward the ‘Joubran bill,’ according to which a judge who did not serve in the IDF or national service[?] would not be able to serve as a Supreme Court Justice.

MK David Rotem (Israel Beitenu), the Chairman of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee held a speedy vote on a proposed bill which would allow the appointment of Justice Asher Grunis as President of the Supreme Court.  The vote was held within 3 minutes of the meetings commencement, and before the opposition MKs entered the committee room.

On Sunday The Ministerial Committe for Legislative Affairs will discuss a bill put forward by MKs Yaakov Katz (National Union), Yariv Levin (Likud), and David Rotem (Yisrael Beiteinu), which would anchor the State’s obligation to invest in expanding settlements in the framework of their “natural growth”.  According to the bill, The Ministers of Defense and Housing will be obligated to annually publish tenders for the construction of housing units in the ten largest settlements in the West Bank.

During the deliberations in the Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee regarding the bill to change the composition of the Judicial Selection Committee, a vote was taken on the bill after it was surprisingly changed at the last minute; no discussion was held on the new version of the bill.  During the heated debate that unfolded, five opposition MKs were thrown out of the room and committee chairman MK David Rotem (Yisrael Beitenu) even went so far as to tell MK Zehava Gal-On (Meretz): “Get out of here, you’re not even an animal”.

A group of right-wing MKs called to ban Israeli-Arab party Ra’am-Ta’al from the Knesset since it awarded honorary plaques to participants in the Gaza flotilla. MKs requesting the ban include David Rotem (Yisrael Beiteinu) and Ronit Tirosh (Kadima).
