Minister of the Interior, Eli Yishai (Shas), asked the Knesset’s Constitution Law and Justice Committee to approve regulations whereby Social Security benefits and voting rights will be denied to a citizen who does not renew his national identity card to the new biometric card. According to the new regulations, citizens will be required to renew their identity card every 10-15 years.

The joint Committee responsible for the implementation of the biometric identification means, approved the regulations and directive of the biometric database, by the votes of two MKs only.

The Ministerial Committee on Biometric Applications rejected Professor Adi Shamir’s proposal for management of the biometric database in a manner that will minimize the infringement of civilian privacy.
