Ben-Gurion University Dean of Students, Yaakov Afek, barred Arab students from having an Arab cultural event planned to be held at the same time as the University’s Student Association Student Day celebrations.  According to Arab students the dean consistently prohibits cultural events aimed at Arab students.

An international committee set-up by the Israeli Council for Higher Education has recommended that the Department of Politics and Government at Ben Gurion University be shut down due to the leftist political bias of its lecturers, which according to the committee causes an impediment to teaching and research.

Dr. Idan Landau, a lecturer at the Ben Gurion University in the Negev, and a prominent peace activist, was sentenced to seven days in a military jail after refusing to report for reserve duty. BGU President, Prof. Rivka Carmi, said that she intends to check if Landau’s refusal violates the collective employment agreement, and if it qualifies as ”unacademic conduct.”

The Student Union of Ben Gurion University is organizing an honorary concert for soldiers on reserve duty, to which the entry will be permitted only to those carrying a reserve duty card. After one of the University’s professors expressed her disagreement with the concert’s restrictions, the University’s president, Professor Rivka Karmi, said that it should be check whether using the University’s email to express this disagreement, was not an abuse of the University’s computer network.

The Ben Gurion University has decided to change its code of ethics and forbid lecturers to express political opinions during classes or use the name of the university when making public statements about political issues.

The Ben-Gurion Universtity prohibits students from distributing flyers by the Solidarity Against Fascism organization on campus. The flyers criticize a series of proposed laws, including the Loyalty Law and the Admission Committees Law. The Dean of Students, Yaakov Afek, explained the prohibition by claiming that the publication constituted defamation. (Hebrew)
