Knesset Education Committee Chairman, MK Alex Miller (Yisrael Beitenu), has proposed a bill following recent Nakba Day commemoration ceremonies in various universities, which would hold a university responsible for the content of events held by students.  In the framework of the bill, the Minister of Education, in his role as the chairman of the Higher Education Council, could impose sanctions on institutions which support or allow an activity “which essentially constitutes a denial of the existence of the State of Israel as a Jewish and Democratic state, promotes racism, violence or terrorism or support of an armed conflict or terrorist attack against the state”.  (Middle East Monitor)

According to a new initiative presented by MK Alex Miller (Yisrael Beitenu), the Minister of Public Security will be able to preventively detain a soccer fan, if he or she is expected to riot during their team’s game. According to the proposal, the police would be able to detain fans without bringing them to court, the administrative detention period would be shorter than that of a security detainee’s, the police will ould not be allowed to “make the fan disappear” and the detainee would be able to contact family and lawyers during detention.

Member of Knesset Alex Miller (“Yisrael Beitenu”), chairman of the Knesset Education and Culture Committee, proposed a bill to amend the state Criminal Code, so that a person convicted of assisting a terrorist organization, who speaks in an educational institution without receiving previous approval from the Minister of Education, in consultation with the Justice Minister, shall be liable to imprisonment of 18 months.

Following intense pressure, Haifa University decided to deny Ra’ed Salah’s entry to campus. Said pressure also included a threat posed by the chair of the Knesset Education Committee, MK Alex Miller (Yisrael Beitenu), that permitting the entry would result in financial sanctions on the university.

Today, the Knesset Constitution Law and Justice Committee approved the “Nakba Bill” proposal, which denies government funding from entities acting “against the state’s principles”. The bill’s initiator, MK Alex Miller (Israel Beitenu), stated during the deliberation that the purpose of the bill is to show that “there is a limit to the extent of exploitation of Israeli democracy”.
