Nearly 95 percent of water pumped in the Gaza Strip are not fit for drinking, according to the United Nations Environment Program, the Palestinian Water Authority, the Coastal Water Commission of Gaza Strip Towns, and international aid agencies. Since 2007, when it imposed a siege on the Gaza Strip, Israel has prohibited the transfer of equipment required for rehabilitating the water and sewage treatment systems in the area.
